The first question I asked was whether or not the person had seen the movie Rain Man. 11 said they had seen the movie and 5 said they had not. This was good for me since a large chunk of my speech concerns the man this movie was based on, and if the class knows about who I am referencing they will probably be more interested. The second question I asked was whether or not the person knew that Dustin Hoffman’s character in Rain Man was based on a real person. 13 said they had and 3 said they had not. This was not really good or bad for me. While an added element of surprise would have been nice when I reveal that the character was based on a real person, I think being familiar with the fact that it was based on a real person could make the audience interested to learn about who that person is. The third question I asked was how many digits of the number Pi (3.14….) they knew.
