Third test notes: Test 3 Notes April 7 Space Station Roots- 1. Mentioned in writings of Tsiolkovsky, early designs made by Von Braun in 1940’s and 50’s 2. First US version, Skylab, launched in 1973 but “lost” in 1979 3. Russia placed Soyuz-Salyut in Orbit in Early 70’s. Morphed into MIR station in 1980’s and 90’s 4. Decision made in mid 80’s by US, Europe, Canada, and Japan to build Freedom, but nothing built until late 90’s when ISS (international space station) came into being with Russia joining as well. 5. ISS still under construction and expected to be completes in 2010. 6. It will house 6 astronauts for long term stays, conducting: Bio-medical experiments to 7. Has “creature comforts” unlike those found on earlier spacecraft, including a galley with ovens, refrigerator/freezer, trash compactor, shower, “waste management compartment” (unisex toilet) Post Apollo Manned (and woman) space activities-
