Digestive System What are two other names for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract? Digestive Tract and Alimentary canal Name for plant-eating animals? Herbivore Name for meat-eating animals? Carnivore Name for animals that eat both plants and meat? Omnivore What is it called when an animal has a GI tract containing a single, true stomach? Monogastric Give an example: Pigs What is it called when an animal has a GI tract containing a large fermentative compartment? Rumen Give an example. Cow Name the five functions of the GI tract. 1. Prehension of food with the lips or mouth 2. Mechanical grinding or breaking down of food 3. Chemical digestion of food 4. Absorption of nutrients and water 5. Elimination of wastes Mouth Use the pictures and descriptions in your book to locate these structures of the digestive system.
