TELEHEALTH (DRAFT) 2 Telehealth (Draft) Technology will be everlasting resolution within society. Technology is utilized within all areas of employment and has proven to offer a most cost efficient outcome for businesses. With the advancement to technology, the healthcare industry has evolved. Technology has made it possible to introduce Telehealth. “Telehealth is the use of technology to deliver health care, health information or health education at a distance” (HRSA, 2016). Within this research paper, we will discuss Telehealth within a rural area and its importance, the cost of Telehealth, how Telehealth can be utilized in rural areas, areas of improvement, and the final cause for Telehealth in a rural area. Telehealth has two different segments; real-time communication and store-and-forward. (HRSA, 2016) Real-time communication consists of a patient communicating with the physician via live audio/video link. By offering real-time communication between the physician/nurse practitioner and the patient, this eliminates travel time for the patient. Real-time communication can also be seen as beneficial for those patients who are on bed rest. It is also a cost reduction to the physician as office space will not be required to obtain during normal business hours of a Monday through Friday setting. Digital imaging transmission is store-and-forward. (HRSA, 2016) “Stand-alone systems like Electronic Health Records (EHRs) or Computerized Decision Support (CDS) are types of health IT that are not typically thought of as Telehealth applications” (HRSA, 2016). TELEHEALTH (DRAFT) 3 Imagine a rural primary care provider (PCP) needing to refer a patient to a Stroke Specialist in an area where no such specialists practice. (HealthIT.gov, 2014) In great times of need and urgency, health care will no longer be a matter of convenience, but of necessity. To help compensate for this, the Internet has developed a paradigm shift in the manner in which health care can be administered to individuals in rural areas. Emerging technologies have made it possible for people living in remote places to obtain quality health care and also have immediate access to medical services that were once problematic to acquire. This is of obvious importance to any person with quality of life or health issues. These emerging technologies have the ability to enable better health care and possibly even save lives. This technology model can be defined as Telehealth. Telehealth can take on many different forms. Examples include videoconferencing, remote monitoring, and provider education; giving care benefits to patients at an instantaneous level - something that was never possible before. (HealthIT.gov, 2014) This is an important consideration as many patients and hospitals are continuing to accept Telehealth as a viable means of provider care, even after a patient’s hospital stay. The number of health care facilities

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
