Level of Consciousness 1) Conscious level – one is aware of events and mental processes 2) Non-conscious level – mental processing is totally removed from conscious processing. 3) Pre-conscious level – mental events are outside awareness, but can easily be brought into awareness. 4) Unconscious level (Freud) – mental events are actively kept out of consciousness. Circadian Rhythms 1) Endogenous - generated by the body independent of environment a. Circadian rhythms – cycle of behavior and physiology that repeats about every 24hrs i. Wakefulness and sleep b. Biological clock is primarily reset by light (Zeitgeber) – time giver (German) c. Superchiasmatic Nucleus – area of the hypothalamus i. SAD – seasonal depression d. Specialized retinal ganglion cells do not contribute to vision, but respond to overall average amount of light e. Duration for humans: 24.2 hours f. Free-running – disintegration without Zeitgeber g. Adenosine – produces sleepiness i. Accumulates during the day and declines during sleep. ii.
