CTT, pp. 44-56 1. Joshua is Moses’ successor 2. The Ark of the Covenant was Israel’s most sacred object. It served as a container for various objects that were sacred to Israelites such as two tablets of the law given to Moses. Also viewed as throne on which YHWH sat. Most important feature that ark was direct manifestation of God’s presence 3. Judges were charismatic leaders, meaning they were chosen by God and endowed with certain gifts that enabled them to lead. Primarily political and military leaders, who also had religious functions. 4. Pattern began with Israelites failing to observe the terms of the covenant, worshiping other gods and behaving immorally. YHWH would become angry and withhold his protection from the Israelites, causing them to be afflicted and oppressed by their enemies. Israelites repent sins and cry out to God for deliverance. God heed their call by sending a judge to unite people, call them to renewed awareness of covenant and lead to military victories. Once judge died, Israelites fall back into life of sin.
