MUSI 2520 NOTES – TEST 3Lecture 10 (Wednesday, May 28, 2014)NewcleusWas a hip hop group Group falls in the Electro-funk or Techno-funk categoryThis group is based on a live band Only recorded 2 albums that would contribute to electro-funk classicsThey are very electronic/technicalMade more radio friendly musicIn the early stages of hip hop people found this groups to be a relief because they had a lighter style than the heavy hip hop groups they were used to hearing Started off as a DJ collective known as Jam On Productions in 1977  didn’t know who they were yet – just starting out They dynamic of this group was different because they were made of family members oHusband and wife were the leads, along with cousins and a brotheroStarted off in 1977 with members including Ben “Cozmo D” Cenac, his cousin Monique Angevin, and her brother Pete (at this time they were all teenagers still in high schooloBy 1979 the group centred around Bonzo’s future wife and himselfoThey had children running around at shows oThere weren’t any permanent members other than the husband and wife team – DJs and MCs came and wentBecause of the coming together of families is why they named the group Newcleus At one point in time it was cool to hear things played backwards or when people usedto speed up singing to sound like a chipmunk 1978/79 they were producing in the studiooNear the end of the tape one of the producers accidently sped up the recording oOne of the producers (Joe Cole) witnessed the mistake, thought it was cool, and exploited it First single came out in 1983 with Mayhew records Known unofficially as the Wikki-Wikki Song when it was released as Jam On Revengeunder MayhewThis group attracted a lot of youth to hip hop – they found it “danceable” The same song was released again later that year to Sunnyview records oIt was titled Jam on Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)oIt was the same as the original Wikki-Wikki SongSONG: Newcleus - Jam on Revenue (The Wikki-Wikki Song)Top 40 single, however it didn’t do too well because there wasn’t much substance to this music Second song was a follow up to Jam On Revenge  was called Jam On ItSONG: Newcleus – Jam On ItoIt was a disappointment oThey weren’t marketed properly They enjoyed extensive touring on Fresh Fes toursThey were older rappers in the crew – didn’t have that necessary youth feel and they faded out
