Conversely, Purposeful Darwinism is basicallycreating an environment where staff struggle to survive in order to increase productivity. It isalso known as the as the “rank and yank” system, rank people based on performance levels andyank out performers. Majority of multinational corporations such as Ford, Accenture andMicrosoft had to abandon this system due its failure to increase yields but we have witnessed afew successful companies like Amazon, the world’s largest giant online retailer which made a netincome of more than 20 billion dollars in 2020, having successfully embraced the corporatepractice to its advantage over the years (Kantor & Streitfeld, 2015). However, in recent times,critics have voiced concerns on whether the corporate business practice should be at allembraced and tolerated despite its unethical approach to hiring and promotion of employees inan organization.Is “Purposeful Darwinism” an ethical approach to hiring and promotion?The New York Times article written by reporters Jodi Kantor and David Streitfeld afterinterviewing former Amazon Employees paints a grim picture of a corporation practicingpurposeful Darwinism whereby employees are never-endingly evaluated and encouraged toreport one another for under performance either real or perceived.
