Tabitha Brooks 2 Designing a Website A website consists of pages that may contain text, graphics, animation, audio clips, movies, links to other pages and sites, forms for entering information into databases, and other materials. Pages are created using the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), a script language that also allows many “embedded” languages such as Java or Visual Basic to run within it[Cla12]. Using HTML, script, or code to create web pages offers some special advantages. Unlike the code in software that people buy at a retail outlet, the source code of web pages is actually transmitted to users’ computers when they navigate to a URL. Web pages are therefore easy to examine and learn from. Downloading the HTML source code for an existing page and copying the format of the page is legal as long as you change its content. However, copying the work of others without crediting the original developer is considered “bad form.” A second advantage of using a script language such as HTML is that
