NANABUSH CREATES THE WORLD 1) The earth originally appeared to be a joyful place where the first birds and animals used to live. Then there was Nanabush a great magician and his only enemies, the serpent people who used to live underwater in a big lake. Nanabush had a brother and both lived near the shore of the lake. There also was a big hill and a tall pine tree. 2) Nanabush had the ability to turn himself into an animal, an old tree stump, or a maple leaf simply by wishing it. It was unlikely that anyone would think Nanabush was capable of creating the world because Nanabush looked like an ordinary man. 3) The only sworn enemies of Nanabush were the serpent people. Nanabush found it very challenging to get along with the creatures because the serpent people were always trying to kill the animal friends of Nanabush. 4) The incident that prompted Nanabush to create the world was his brother’s death. One day Nanabush’s brother went out to hunt but did not come back for a long time. So Nanabush set out on a quest to find his brother. Eventually Nanabush across the secret serpent world and
