4Central Case for LecturesAn 18-y/o male freshman at KU arrived home from college not feelingwell.He had a low grade fever, shortness of breath, & was lethargic,sleeping 14–16 hours each day.A nose bleed that would not stopprompted the parents to insist on a trip to the Emergency Department(ED).On admission to the ED, it was noted that the patient was pale, had arapid heartbeat and breath rate, petechiae, slight yellowing of thesclera, and hepatomegaly.Point of care testing (POCT) was performed for a Hemoglobin (HB)and Hematocrit (HCT), troponin, chest x-ray, and prothrombin time(pro-time/PT).7POCT“Point‐of‐care testing (POCT) is definedas medical testing at or near the site ofpatient care.
