Spectrophotometric Determination of Aspirin Natasha Ingraham Cassidy Runyan Robin McCown Chemistry 112 – Laboratory 002 September 10 th , 2013
1. Research Question: a. How does the over the counter pain reliever (Bayer) compare to the different samples of 1:50 ASA solution tested, or which sample is the closest to the Bayer sample? 2. Observations & Results: a. Utilizing Table 1, seen below, we observed that the Bayer solution we experimented with had the absorbance level of 0.367. This compares well with between 4 mL and 6 mL of 1:50 ASA solution. Since we were only able to complete one tablet of normal aspirin, as the teacher requested, we weren’t able to complete a table comparing two brands. The only aspirin we were able to compare with the sample 1:50 ASA solution was the Bayer brand. These statistics are located below in Table 2. All calculations can be found on pages 3 and 4 of the laboratory notebook. The graph for 1:50 ASA absorbencies can be found on the back page of this laboratory write up.
