21st Century Leadership 1 Introduction Leadership is defined, as the capability of influencing a group toward achieving set of goals or a vision (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 376). No company has done this better than Google. In 1998 Google was formed with the goal in mind of creating the perfect search engine. The founders knew that in order bring their ideas to life they needed some of the brightest minds to accomplish this goal. Google is known for their work culture and leadership style. Google is an employee-oriented leader, giving emphasis to interpersonal relationships by taking a peculiar interest in the employees’ needs and from accepting individual dissimilarities in the middle of members. This creates a work environment that everyone wants to be a part of therefore employee’s efficiency levels are greater than those of other companies. Leadership style of Larry Page When it comes to leadership, Larry Page, Google’s chief executive officer is equipped with the attributes of new leadership due to his vision, charisma and being transformational. Larry Page is transformational because he has the ability to inspire and motivate employees to perform. Transformational leadership characterized by an individual who transforms ethics, needs, goals, standards and values of organizations and people. Such leaders generally are more proactive. Transformational leadership often shows features of positive nurturing, self- confidence, compassion and empathy. They impact attitudes along with building commitment to accomplishing goals of the organization. Larry Page has the capability of bringing about major changes in both the organization and employees. Larry Page has the capability of leading changes in culture, strategy, and vision of the organization along with promoting innovation in technologies and products.
21st Century Leadership 2 As CEO, Larry Page has a personality that distinguishes him from anyone else. Larry is the opposite of a social animal and concentrates on living, breathing, and eating everything about Google. He is very ambitious about his work and believes that the only way to get people to notice something great was to perform useful tasks better than everyone else. Behind the vision of Google, Page was the purpose who is a conceptual designer and loves challenges. “While it's easy to scoff at Page's quirks -- his odd obsessions, his unrealistic expectations, his impatience for a future dangling out of immediate reach -- sometimes his seemingly crazy ideas end up creating breakthrough innovations, and skeptical Googlers end up admitting he was right” (Levy, 2011). Larry Page led major changes at Google. When he became the CEO of the company, he sent out e-mails to everyone that explained how Google’s meetings would run more efficiently.
