Psychology 101 Chapter 16: Stress and Health (pages 540-571) The mind body interact & this connection affects the way one thinks, feels, & reacts AND their overall state of health as well Health psychology – the study of how biological, psychological, environmental, and cultural factors are involved in physical health and the prevention of illness; a part of the broad movement known as behavioral medicine I. Experiencing Stress We frequently describe stress as if it was an actual stimulus that places a demand on us or threatens our wellbeing We are just as likely to describe it as a physical response or reaction that we feel Whether we feel stress depends on how we interpret the situation we’re in; consequently some researchers describe it as an internal psychological process through which external events are interpreted as threatening or demanding Stress – people’s physical and psychological reactions to demanding situations Stressors  –  the demanding or threatening situations that produce stress II. Experiencing Stress: The Stress Response Stress is an adaptive reaction General adaption syndrome (GAS) Hans Selye’s model of stress as a general, nonspecific reaction that occurs in three phases: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion Alarm reaction – corresponds to the adaptive fight-or-flight response; enables us to get out of life-threatening jams, but is extremely intense and can’t be sustained for long periods without serious negative consequences: even death Resistance phase – the body adjusts its physiological reaction to reduce, or cope with , the still-present threat Exhaustion phase – the body cannot continue to maintain a high state of readiness for extended periods of times and the body begins to give up Today it is believed that this theory is not as general and nonspecific as Selye suggested because different stressors produce different patterns of response dependant on the cognitive interpretation of the situation Stress also provokes emotional responses (fear, anger, sadness, dejection, grief) As people deal with stress, they often learn useful things about themselves and their abilities Stress reaction is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system Women tend to fight more than flee – an evolutionary effect: protect and calm offspring versus become aggressive; also more likely to create and maintain social networks that help in protecting selves and offspring III. Experiencing Stress: Cognitive Appraisal Cognitive appraisal – the idea that in order to feel stress you need to perceive a threat and come to the conclusion that you may not have adequate resources to deal with that threat Cortisol in urine – suggests higher levels of stress IV. Experiencing Stress: External Sources of Stress Significant life events – Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) put together by Holmes and Rahe Most of the life events are connected with some kind of
