HON 191 | Katie Sheridan | Vista Entry 9 A new perspective on the “American Dream” – sex and narcotics. It seems like Díaz is trying too hard in all of the wrong ways. I cannot help but criticize his lifestyle, yet it is obviously reminiscent of “back home” in the Dominican Republic. The fact that he eventually turned into his brother, the young man he once admired as his big brother outside of his sexual tendencies, reflects the culture of his people. As a twelve-year-old, his brother was having sex with multiple partners. One of the uncles even states that if he were in the Dominican Republic, he would be drinking alcohol and having sex. This then poses the question of America as a “melting pot.” Although modern ideas view America as more of a “salad bowl,” it is clear that certain aspects of life outside the United States have been transferred here, but looked upon in very much a different manner.
