IntroductionThe beginning of the twentieth century was really focuses on behaviorism. Behaviorismaccording to John B. Watson is the theory that the environment and learning are the primaryfactors in mental development (Gazzaniga,2018). Yet, as the twentieth century progressed intothe 1950’s and 1960’s behaviorism was losing traction. This loss of traction gave way to the birthof cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive neuroscience became the study of the what came fromawareness, perception and reasoning. As well as the study of the nervous system is organized andhow it functions. Some of the biggest questions revolving around cognitive neuroscience areabout memory and all of the ideas and functions that pertain to it, and how it works. Memorybeing what our brain stores as a well as how it recalls and uses the information it has collectedand stored. This essay will analyze and explain how working memory is different yet similar tolong term memory; when it is adaptive to remember or forget certain information; if memoriesare accurate. This paper will also explain how knowledge and understanding how the brain andmemory systems work can help those with memory issues, as well as the role in which age andenvironment have an impact on how memories are formed and retained.Working Memory and Long-Term MemoryOur brains are incredible working machines that near cease to be doing something. Theycollect and stone an incredible amount of information each and every day. Even going throughthe hard work of sorting out what is needed now, what may possibly be needed later, or if it iseven needed at all. One of the brains major types of memory is working memory, this is theprocess of storing and processing information at the same time. This type of memory is shortlived though and is most like short term memory where information is not stored for a longperiod of time. Working memory can maintain and process seven different ideas at the same time2
