Introduction to Ontological HumilityAnyone that has siblings will not struggle to understand ontological humility. Evenwithout siblings’ courtrooms are filled with examples of ontological humility. Ontologicalhumility simply states that any conversation consists of three parts: yours, mine, and the truth.When conducting business, whether it is a small local business or a Fortune 500 company,understanding and implementing various techniques are helpful for success. Understandingontological humility, cognitive differentiation, cognitive integration, and how they pertain to asuccessful business model innovation (BMI) will help. The following few sections of this paperwill explain all the various tools each business should use.CognitionCognition, according to dictionary.com, is the act or process of knowing, also known asperception. A fortune 500 company or a consumer cognition is vital to success. Two cognitiveprocesses have been prominent in research: cognitive differentiation and cognitive integration(Wilms, Winnen & Lanwehr, 2019). Cognitive differentiation and integration are interrelatedsince effective integration depends on effective differentiation (Carroll & Bright, 2010).DifferentiationDifferentiation focuses on whether a person acknowledges that there is more than oneside or dimension to an issue or problem (Carrol & Bright, 2010). Lee Atwater said in the 1980’sperception is reality, although a profound statement does not apply to cognitive differentiation. Inorder to understand cognitive differentiation, a person must look past their perception and acceptthe perception of others and the facts.2
IntegrationIntegration is the perceived argument for and against an issue (Carroll & Bright, 2010).Cognitive integration also refers to the development of complex connections amongdifferentiated characteristics (Wilms, Winnen & Lanwehr, 2019). Integration in an issue requiresthat an individual has the ability to implement an adequate amount of differentiation (Carroll &Bright, 2010).Business Model InnovationShould organizational redesign precede BMI?One assumption to consider when attempting to answer this question is that businessowners are willing to redesign or introduce new BMI to increase business. That assumption canbe false or accurate depending on the business owner. Plenty of business owners believe that if itis not broken, do not fix it.
