Brendon Barclay 2/16/15 6 th period Mardi Gras celebration originated in medieval Europe. On March 2, 1699, French explorer Baptiste Le Moune Sieur de Bienville traveled to the United States. He arrived a little south of New Orleans. He named that place "Pointe du Mardi Gras". In 1703 Bienville and his men celebrate the first Mardi Gras in the United States. Bienville established New Orleans in 1718. In 1730 Mardi Gras became an openly celebrated holiday in New Orleans. Mardi Gras color are green, purple, and gold. These colors were chosen by Rex the king of Mardi Gras. He chose these colors to honor the visiting of Russian Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich Romanoff, whose house colors were purple, green and gold. Each of the Mardi Gras colors have a meaning.
