Orders Admit Surgical ICU Medical ICU Telemetry Unit Medical Ward Surgical Ward Very sick patients with conditions that require surgery; Nurse to patient ratio 1:1 (High Speed Nurses) Very sick patients with conditions that do not require surgery; Nurse to patient ratio 1:1 (High Speed Nurses) Stable patients that require close monitoring; (MI, heart arrhythmias, CVA) Nurse to patient ratio ≈ 1:3-6 (Nurse experience varies) Stable patients that require basic medical intervention; Nurse to patient ratio ≈ 1:3-6 (Nurse experience varies) Pre and post op patients that are stable; Nurse to patient ratio ≈ 1:3-6 (Nurse experience varies) Nurses are divided into Registered Nurses (RNs 4 year degree) and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs 2 year degree). They are both found in all areas of the hospital. ICU nurses are experienced and have to be good at what they do. The experience of telemetry unit and ward nurses can vary dramatically. The most experienced RN will be the charge nurse.
