Troy Maxson, the Villain OR Hero In a drama or fairytale world, there are always characters casted as villains or heroes. Villains are often defeated, while heroes often win. In August Wilson’s,Fences, the protagonist of the play, Troy Maxson, had various traits which perceived him to be either a hero or villain. He had many faults, which left him in a bad position, though was an all-around powerful, responsible man. Through all of his personalities, August Wilson made Troy out to be a hero and villain. Overall, Troy is a hero because he has dedicated his life and taken the responsibility of his family. In the beginning of the play, August Wilson provides his audience with a brief description of Troy’s life. He has a best friend named Bono, two sons Lyon and Cory, a brother named Gabriel and a wife, Rose. Wilson access each characters role as being a significant part of Troy’s life, which gives readers insight on Troy’s actions and the type of man he really is as oppose to how he acts. Throughout the play, Troy had many faults with each significant member in his life. Most of his actions were simply because he was an overprotective and responsible person.
