Johnson Zhang BioMI 418 The graduate student assumes that just because more colonies grew from the water sample that has been left out in room temperature than the water sample straight from the refrigerator indicates that the pathogen has undergone “resuscitation”. However, it is also likely that the cells in the microcosm are injured and on the verge of dying. To prove this theory, I propose two sets of experiments to be conducted. A cell is “injured” if it has an “increased sensitivity to components of growth media that are not normally inhibitory” (Bogosian, 2001). For instance, if an injured cell is presented with oxidative stress (such as exposure to hydrogen peroxide on the growth media), it might die. On the other hand, a healthy cell would be able to combat the oxidative stress and live. So, for this first experiment, I would take samples from the cold-treated microcosm right after it is taken out of the refrigerator. Then, I would plate the samples on three different kinds of heart infusion
