Lecture 3 ° If “art” and art objects are products (and the frameworks of products) of the human manipulation of space and time then… How is art “experience”? o All arts depend on images, images work in/as human experience o Your experience of world is always indirect: through sophisticated and technical, complicated systems o No such thing as immediate experiences o Art is pre-intellectual and thus pre-consciousness o Art is a (sensory) stimulus triggered by your perception ° Owl picture Mimesis, replication of an owl from 75,000 years ago Simple yet sophisticated drawing Found a nice stone to make it look 3-dimmensional ° Perception Perceptions re-framed by conception ° Still-life picture (apples and vase) Simple, unthreatening, safe, composed Imitated Just as the owl was imitated 1826- photography, changed the world o technical processes could make an image of the world, rather than human art imitations
