Tommy Scherer CIS 370 15 December, 2015 Innovation at its Finest Cisco Systems is an IT company based in San Jose, California, and it was founded in 1984 by Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner. They design, manufacture, and sell networking equipment helping to connect people from all over the world. Cisco produces a tremendous vari- ety of products for a number of different services including: corporate, small business, home users, hardware, software, voice over IP, hosted collaboration solutions, and network emergency response (Wikipedia). Cisco has virtually dominated the IT world since it was founded in 1984. They released their first product in 1986 called the advanced gateway server router. In 1990 Cisco went public and got listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. They made their first significant business move in 1993 by acquiring Crescendo Communications, an ethernet switching start-up. The acquisition started Cisco s highly profitable Catalyst switching business, and brought in a number of impor- tant executives(Exigent Networks). The very next year Cisco another company called Kalpana, a company credited with inventing ethernet switching. In 1995 John Chambers takes over as CEO and grows the company from a $1 billion company to the $40 billion company it is today. An- other huge advancement in the company was the investment of voice over IP in 1999. They claimed that this would make voice a free service on data networks. Also in 1999 Cisco launched the catalyst 6500 ethernet switch, which became the most profitable product of their $15 billion switching business. Cisco launched one of their most successful products in 2004 called the inte- grated services router that was used for branch offices. That same year Cisco introduced the

CRS-1 system which they claimed can support 1.2 terabits per second of bandwidth in a single system. In 2008 Cisco launched the Nexus 7000, the center of Cisco s next-generation data cen- ter network(Exigent Networks). Cisco enters a new market in 2009 by introducing the Unified Computing System. This system combines servers, switching, virtualization, and storage access in an integrated system designed to unify the disparate elements of a data center (Exigent Net- works). Cisco was awarded their 10,000th patent in 2013 solidifying their success and brilliance as a company(Exigent Networks).
