Overdose with opiates is becoming very common Benzos are becoming common in overdose too. alcohol and opiates should not be used with benzos Substance use- use a substance for a long period of time, stopping social and jobs, have problems and won’t stop, spend a lot of time getting substance, develop tolerance. Intoxication- Withdrawal – symptoms of not using the substance when being used daily Whenever you go through detox you experience the opposite of symptoms such as constipation/ diarrhea, reduced anxiety/ increased anxiety Substance abuse do what to the brain? They hijack the circuits of the brain Meth, cocaine dopamine neurotransmitter Neurotransmitters affected by alcohol ? GABA Assessment for the person with substance use disorder- what is the substance, how much and how long, how often when was the last use? What happened the last time you didn’t use it? Vital signs in a person suspected of using? Increased in vitals if detoxing normal High on opiates- low bp, high pulse low respiration rate. THEY CAN die from respiratory arrest Stimulants v/s? Everything increases what do they die in overdose? Cardiac What kind of physical problems do substance abusers have? Comorbidity it can be physical or psychological (hep c, schizo)
