Chapter 9: Josquin Desprez Josquin Desprez (ca 1450-1521) held prestigious positions at courts and churches in France and Italy compositions appeared in large number of manuscripts and printed more collections than any other composer before 1550 Ottaviano Petrucci: first printer of polyphonic music published 3 books of Josquin masses and reprinted each to meet the demand Josquin Desprez hailed the “best of the composers of our time” and “the father of musicians” 1538: Martin Luther proclaimed that “Josquin is the master of the notes” Writers praised his music for expressing emotions, and humanist scholars compared him to Virgil and Michelangelo as an artist without peer in his art Praise reflects not only on Josquin bu on his time, for it shows the greatly increased interest during the Renaissance in the individual artist in the power of music to express feelings and ideas
