Question 1 According to the explanations provided by McShane and Von Glinow (2013), explain and debate one of the opportunities and one of the challenges of globalization. Explain how workplace diversity might be related to globalization. Answer Globalization is a connection of people throughout the world, in this there are opportunities and challenges that present themselves (McShane and Von Glinow, 2013). Many companies strive for this opportunity to expand with a larger market of consumers, a great opportunity that has challenges; cultural diversity being the most president. When a corporation expands overseas, they gain advertisement, status, and concerns. In order to transition into another country the company must be prepared otherwise it will have difficulties transitioning. An example is given in the text, Organizational behavior by McShane and Von Glinow (2013), where a company is preparing to go to Japan, a country built around tradition. Japan has a very loyal, honor built, and tradition based culture. Before this company sends employees into such a culture they should prepare them for this adaptation. In the same aspect workers in that region must maintain the culture; an example of this could be the McDonald’s in the Philippines. In the Philippines the McDonald’s serves rice, “bone in” chicken, and other local favorites. They adjusted the McDonald’s culture, adapting to new surroundings. So, from a business standpoint globalization is a great way to expand business and open a door to new markets. At the same time adaptations toward diversities is a must in order to ensure success in another country. A business should prepare, be open to change, and recognize cultural differences.
