Western University - Faculty of Engineering Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering CEE 9518 – Building Information Modelling Course Outline – 2012/2013 Objectives: Provide essential knowledge required to manage and implement BIM technologies in construction process Provide professionals with relevant skills to use BIM in the design and construction of facilities, with an emphasis on structural and civil roles Use of BIM software in the process of preparing the models, analysis and documentation Topics: The entire course is divided into six modules along with hands-on session and a project Module I Introduction to BIM How BIM is different from Computer-Aided Design, its relevance to the traditional and evolving construction processes, BIM terminology, benefits, and challenges including relevance to structural and civil practitioners. Module II Use of BIM Workflow using BIM compared and contrasted to traditional (non-BIM) processes. Introduction to the use of BIM beyond the design and construction phases. Introduction to challenges and benefits of BIM in multi-disciplinary environments. Module III Modeling libraries and data management in BIM How model libraries are defined. Elements of model libraries. Introduction to model library databases. Data management. Effect on workflow and document generation. Module IV Model Definition and Exchange Level of Development, specification standards and model exchange. Standards: neutral standards, CIS/2, IFC, design iteration review and Coordination. Module V BIM Coordination Standalone federated models, quantity takeoff for schedules, scheduling, show the big idea of collaboration, communication and coordination and how information can be leveraged Module VI BIM Project Planning BIM as a platform for coordination, collaboration, communication and decision making.
