Mosquito and Mosquito-Borne Disease Control Mosquito and mosquito-borne disease prevention and control o Goal: Minimize annoying and harmful effects of mosquito bites and interrupt pathogen transmission. “Eradication” is desirable but difficult to achieve. o Approaches: Prevent mosquito bites Suppress mosquito populations Minimize mosquito-vertebrate contact Reduce longevity of female mosquitoes Reduce host susceptibility Surveillance o Core objectives: Determine mosquito distribution, abundance, and degree of activity o Tools Mosquito abundance and distribution Mosquito traps (light, gravid, aspirator, emergence, etc.) Degree of pathogen activity Testing mosquitoes for parasites (virus isolation, microscopy, PCR,  sequencing) Vertebrate serology (seroprevalence, sentinel birds, etc.) Dead bird testing o Synthesis Critical thresholds of density or infection prevalence, vectorial capacity
