Muscoid and Blow Flies Order: Diptera o 188 families o 10,000 genera o 150,000 species o Earliest fossils 225 million years ago Diptera: Two suborders o Nematocera Mosquitoes, crane flies, and midges o Brachycera Horse flies, Soldier flies, Blow flies, and House flies Fly characteristics o Size: 3-100 mm o One pair of wings (mesothorax) Some wingless o Complete metamorphosis o Larvae called “maggots” o Diverse habitats Diptera o Types of Flies (Muscidae, Muscoid flies) House Fly,  Musca domestica Nuisance in animal facilities (can increase bacteria in milk),transmit human and  animal disease-causing organisms, breed in manure and wet organic matter (feed and hay), nearby homes complain about flies  Face Fly,  Musca autumnalis Females are cattle and horse pests (eyes, mouth and muzzle), can transmit  pinkeye and eye parasites, will feed on blood if present, breed in animal manure  Stable Fly,  Stomoxys calcitrans
