It is a management dictum that authority should be equal to the responsibility. Identify situations where this is not true, and suggest how this weakness might be compensated for. Should managers be experts in the area they are supervising? Does this change as you work up the ranks? Typically management theory supports that the higher you move up the broader you need to be, as you cover more ground but less in depth. Is this a true statement, when may this not be true? Even though management possesses more authority, once management assigns a certain task to an employee, the employee now has the authority and responsibility to do whatever it takes to complete the task successfully. Authority - in context of a business organization, authority can be defined as the power and right of a person to use and allocate the resources efficiently, to take decisions and to give orders so as to achieve the organizational objectives. Authority must be well- defined. All people who have the authority should know what is the scope of their authority is and they shouldn’t misuse it. Authority is the right to give
