Looked at how members of one small village began to understand AIDS as it first emerged Studied local beliefs about AIDS, local treatments. But also explained how the emergence and prevalence of AIDS in Haiti is related to poverty, which has roots in Haiti’s short history ( fought and gained independence from France in 1804, involvement of the US) and discuss how Haiti’s economy is connected to the world economy Created an organization called Patterns in Health ° ° As AIDS emerged, they compared it to another disease that they had seen before. People who had gone to capital city had AIDS. Kinds of things that they did to survive were things that put them at risk for AIDS. Struggle to survive/find employmentfound a boyfriend to live with and he had AIDS. Involved because she needed to eat and have a roof over her head. Important to understand Haiti’s history. World powers not happy that Haiti became free. Link between poverty and illness and the limited access to healthcare. Medication cocktail to help with AIDS was very expensive, and he tried to get people to help pay for it. ° Partners is health. ° ° What can you do with an Anth degree? ° A lot of market research and business anth=why? What do they offer? Spend a long time observing peopleunderstand how people use that product and then make it to where more people want to buy it. ° How an anthropologist created Go-Gurt ° ° WHY STUDY ANTH? Fulfills a general ed requirement at LSU Helps one understand other groups of people, other cultures (important given increasing cultural diversity in US and increasing in US and increasing globalization more generally) Helps one understand what it means to be human Can help us understand more important issues society faces (poverty, homelessness, violence, war, disease, pollution) Can be useful for one’s career ( as anth or any job where it is useul to know about people in society) Knowing facts about other cultures provide great topics for party conversations (“Did you know there is a group in Indonesia that has 5 genders?) ° ° WHAT MAKES ANTH DISTINCTIVE IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES?
