12 February 2016 English 3520 Word Count: 648 The Outsiders JC Although it is said that authors often times have symbolism in their novels without meaning to it, it is still a fun thing to discover symbolism within a text. It is often like a story within a story, and a reader can find deeper meaning upon discovering the symbolism. In The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, a strong symbolic connection between one of the characters and Christianity occurs. Johnny Cade, one of the main characters in the story, symbolically resembles Jesus Christ. The very initials of Johnny Cade correlate with those of Jesus Christ. While Johnny is in the church with Ponyboy he writes his initials in the sand as JC. This is when the reader first would easily have a lightbulb effect, and realize that those initials are also those of Jesus Christ; not to mention they are in a church. Johnny represents Jesus Christ beyond his simple initials however. Johnny clearly lives an unfair life. He is neglected by his mother and by his teachers. He is overlooked and
