Take aways The sample variance is approximately the average squared distance from the mean. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance. In Stat 10, the standard deviation is used when judging the nearness of the data to the mean.

Purpose of the Variance and SD In this lecture, we are introduced to the sample variance and the sample standard deviation to help us estimate the uncertainty associated with a sample statistic. In later chapters we will also use these to measure how close our sample mean is to the population mean.
