Running head: LACK OF STANDARDIZED CODING SYSTEMS 1 Lack of Standardized Coding Systems Student’s Name University Affiliation Lack of Standardized Coding Systems The absence of standards concerning the data definitions of hospitals, EHR sellers and other medical facilities needs data-mapping elements across the sites to function properly. The lack of standards may slow down the process of creating high-quality measures. Different organizations within the medical field use various codes. Such different codes result in time- consuming initiatives to link the two systems together. For example, EHRs in the physician’s office usually collects data from that office (Davis, Devoe, Kansagara, Nicolaidis & Englander, 2012). Also, most measures consider their relevant population concerning an event that occurs within the hospital. To examine healthcare across the continuum, a method to capture clinical information regarding patients from other parts of the hospital, such as labs and hospitals is necessary.
