Name Professors Name Course Date EFFECTS OF NANKING MASSACRE ON CHINESE PEOPLE AND THEIR CULTURE “If the dead people from the Nanking massacre were to link their hands, they would have stretched from Nanking to the city of Hangchow, Spanning a distance of about two hundred meters. Their blood would weigh about twelve hundred tones, and their mutilated bodies would fill twenty-four one hundred railroad cars. Stacked on top of each other, these mutilated bodies would reach the height of a seventy four-story building” (Iris Chang). Looking back to the Nanking massacre, one can’t help but express his or her profound sorrow. If history repeats itself then, this should never happen again.13th December 1937 will be a day that the world will live to remember when the Nanking, which is the former capital of China, got occupied by the imperial army from Japan and within a six week period hundreds of Chinese civilian and unarmed soldiers lost their lives to this genocide known as the Nanking massacre (Rape of Nanking ). Both China and Japan suffered a big blow from the many lives that were consumed without compensation. Moreover, between twenty thousand and eighty thousand women were raped. From Japanese using civilians as practice for the training in bayonet to everyday public executions, from women being raped and killed to infants being killed and

piled in stacks. Chinese still hold to the accusation that it was Japanese infliction on them. Furthermore, tension is exacerbated even further by Japanese denial of accepting the event full scale. Nanking massacre brought a lot of effects to the people and culture. To begin with the Japanese education system, due to the massacre schools in Japan started operating like miniature military units(Chang 30).Textbooks had been turned to a propaganda function and school teachers acted as recruits of the military. As a matter of fact, one of the textbooks that was used in teaching had the shape of Japan which acted as a symbol for justification of the superiority that Japan had. The book talked about how Japan appeared to be standing in the vanguard of Asia, bravely advancing into the pacific. At the same time they appeared ready to defend the
