Demonstration Problem: 4.1. The figure below shows a four-panel Howe bridge truss acted upon by three concentrated loads. Calculate the internal forces in the members of the truss if forces “F1” = 50.kN, F2” = 100 kN and “F3” = 150 kN. The distances “x” and “y” are 2.0 m and 2.5 m respectively. This problem is included to illustrate a number of additional points. The loading is not symmetrical and the horizontal force generates a horizontal reaction component at the pinned support. Also, one of the members is a zero-force member. Step (1): Draw the free body diagram of the truss showing all external forces. Include a horizontal component at the pinned support. Step (2): Calculate the support reactions (include a check) and redraw the free body diagram.
