Note how the period goes after the citation, not at the end of the last word. This shows to which sentence the citation belongs and is why a writer should not put a citation between two sentences. Bice and Simpson (2013) “also demonstrate how to execute a direct quote when the authors’ names should appear in the body of the sentence” (p. 254). Note how the period comes after the closing of the citation, as it did above. Finally, when a quote is more than 40 words, one should really think long and hard about including it. Ideally, this should be extremely rare and perhaps never even be used once during an entire graduate program. Paraphrasing should be used instead. If there is absolutely no other way to do a long quote over 40 words, it should be blocked, and double spaced without quotation marks. This entire section was done as a block quote and is 80 words.
