Section 1.4 Variable : A symbol frequently a letter - that is used to stand for a number in an algebraic expression. Its value can vary (change) from expression to expression. Constant : A number in an algebraic expression. Its value is constant (unchanging) from expression to expression. Some symbols, like , which always have the same value or also constants. Algebraic expression : A collection of numbers, variables, operation symbols and grouping symbols which does not contain an equal sign (=). Evaluate an algebraic expression : Substitute the value(s) that you are given for the variable(s) and simplify. Equation : Two algebraic expressions separated by an equal sign (=). Determine if a number is a solution to an equation : Substitute the value(s) that you are given for the variable(s) and see if you get a true statement. Solve an equation : Determine which value(s) of the variable will make the equation a true statement.
