ENVE2001 Extra problems (February 20, 2016) Problem 1. A synthesis gas is made by cracking and partially oxidizing butane (C 4 H 10 ) in the presence of steam and air. The product synthesis gas has the volume percent composition as follow: 3.5% CO 2 , 2.3% C 2 H 4 , 23.2% CO, 39.3% H 2 , 11.6% CH 4 , 1.7% C 2 H 6 , and 18.4% N 2 . How many kilograms of air are used per kilogram of butane? Problem 2. Ethanol (C 2 H 5 OH) is dehydrogenated in the presence of air over a catalyst, and the following reactions take place: C 2 H 5 OH CH 3 CHO + H 2 2C 2 H 5 OH + 3O 2 4CO 2 + 6H 2 2C 2 H 5 OH + 2H 2 4CH 4 + O 2 CH 3 CHO is a liquid and is collected at the bottom of the reactor. The gas mixture exits at the top

How many kilograms of CH 3 CHO are produced per kilogram of ethanol fed into the process? Problem 3. 90 m 3 /h of acid mine water containing 800 mg/L Fe 2+ is to be treated with a water-lime slurry containing 18 wt. % Ca(OH) 2 to precipitate the iron according to the following reaction: Fe 2+ + 0.5 O 2 + 2 OH-+ 0.5 H 2 O Fe(OH) 3 The O 2 is supplied by bubbling air into the reactor. Calculate the hourly rate of lime slurry required....

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
