PSYC 215 Lecture 8 Midterm We don’t need to know names of the experimenters of studies, neither the dates. Know the findings and what was done. The studies that he presents in class are very likely to be in the exam. The studies that are explained in greater details in the textbook will probably be there too. Ratio: half research, half conceptual. Self-Evaluation and Self-Esteem In 2000, at the Olympics, first time a triathlon was ever done at the Olympics. The winner was a Canadian. Very exciting race. Pride involved because he is from our country. One of his colleagues suggests to him that they should do a triathlon. Then he asked another colleague and the other colleague said yes. Finally, he agrees. They start training. Two didn’t own a bicycle, one couldn’t swim. They started training. They learned how to learn. They had never ran more than 1km or 2km. Eventually, they got to a point where they thought they could do it. They started out as fast as they could, then they were exhausted. They finished the 10km and were proud because they had never done such a thing. They actually finished it. They were very proud and felt good about themselves. Then they looked at the results and found out that they were pretty much the last ones. Then they kind of felt bad. They had self- conceptualization. There was an esteemed component. He felt proud about himself because he could call himself a triathlete. At one point, in any race, someone had to come last. They thought: why not us? Self-esteem: - Textbook definition: The positive or negative overall evaluation that each person has of himself or herself - Evaluative thoughts and feelings about self Just as you can evaluate a classroom, a pizza, you can also evaluate yourself. To what extent is self- esteem feelings, to what extent is it thoughts. We feel really good when we think that we are doing well. When we think poorly about ourselves, it can feel really bad about ourselves. Self-evaluation can have implications for other things in our life. Correlates with many other variables: being happier, more motivated, better relationship. Everybody does this: able to evaluate ourselves. That can be a range of thoughts and feelings. “Trait” self-esteem: Chronic 1. I feel that I'm a person of worth, at least on an equal basis with others. 2. I feel I have a number of good qualities. 3. All in all, I am inclined to feel that I am a failure.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
