5/3/2013 1 8. Cluster Sampling 1 Elements in the population are grouped according to some criteria to form clusters The clusters are the sampling units Cl l d d i l d Clusters are selected under simple random sampling 2 Example 1. Individuals in an area might be grouped based on their addresses to form clusters. 2 dd i h b d f 2. Addresses might be grouped to form regions (clusters), and regions are sampling units. 3 Why use cluster samples? Constructing a sampling frame list of observation units may be difficult, expensive, i ibl or impossible The population may be widely distributed geographically or may occur in natural clusters such as households or schools 4 Basically, cluster sampling is simple random sampling with cluster as the sampling unit and the variation among the clusters (sampling units) determine the degree of error in the estimates 5 Notation: N : Number of clusters in the population M i : Number of elements in cluster i , i = 1, 2, …, N M :

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
