Lecture 2 – Ancient Civilizations and Technological Determinism Ancient Technological Development - Tool use for hunting and gathering (2 million years ago) Fire was controlled not created. In these places, they ate plants but agriculture means they grew vegetables and might have surplus as well. Wiki: Nomadic people (or nomads) are people who move from one place to another, instead of living in one place. - - Agricultural Revolution (12000 years ago) Two things happen in agri revo: 1) we harvest foods 2) animals became domesticated for food basically. As a result of that human population Increases. Agriculture gives a population jump But after agriculture we had enough resources that population could grow. Early Old-World Hydraulic Civilizations These civilizing grow due to use of water In farm, we need water to grow plants. - Urban revolution, 6000 years ago when cities born because of - Irrigation agriculture, management of flood water and fertilization, agricultural surplus and population increase - early civilization recognized that water can be stored and rain water can be collected for agriculture. So they use irrigation, then fertilization, then domestication animal. As a result, we got: - Agriculture gives a population jump - But after agriculture we had enough resources that population could grow. - Management of surplus led to centralized government, taxation
