Punishment Abstract In the United States criminal justice system, after a person had been convicted of a crime, some form of punishment is delivered. How that punishment is doled out depends on any number of factors, but just why does the United States punish criminals the way that it does? Having come quite a way from the days of an eye for an eye, the United States and sought to balance the needs of a civil society to feel safe and feel that justice is served with the notion that we maintain a level of humanity and dignity even in times of punishment (Foster, 2006) Punishment should not only serve to deter future crimes in both the offender and would be offenders, but it should also garner a level of rehabilitation for the offender to allow for a transition back into the society from which they came and had offended within.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
