Discussion 3 What, if anything, do you think the U.S. should have done differently up to World War I? I think the Americans did what was right for them, to engage the Germans in combat only as a means to end the German regime and "make the world safe for democracy", and to have no interest in taking any of their land as their own. At first America tried to stay out of the war but opinion changed with the emergence of unrestricted submarine warfare that sunk the Lusitania in 1915 killing American citizens however this was not the straw that broke the camel’s back. It took more years of losing product, funds, and American lives to the depths to finally really change American status in the war. What finally changed the Americans minds

Unformatted text preview: and got them into the war was the Zimmerman telegram where the German government sent a covert message to the Mexicans to arm themselves and invade America. Great Britain sent the telegram to the Americans who got it published and America went to war, though it took America a year to rally and train troops and get enough supplies but by the Tme they got to Germany the war didn’t last much longer. Germany was Tred and depleted of resources, whereas America was newly trained and ready to Fght. ±hey went in, showed their support, and they did what was right for their country....
