“In 1885, the Italian law professor Raffaele Garofalo coined the term “criminology” (in Italian, criminologia).” (Alder et al., 2013). Criminology was taught shortly after that. Criminology is essentially a subgroup of sociology. Criminology most certainly affects how we control crime. Controlling crime really comes down to, officer deterrence and then steering people away from crime, which education could be used here. For example, instead of telling people that drinking and driving are bad, and they could get arrested. Focus on how it could affect their life after a DUI or show them statistics on DUI related deaths and how it affects other people, appeal to their emotional side. “The Classical School of Criminology is premised on the theory that people have free will in formulating decisions, and that punishment is capable of deterring crime, so long as it is carried out without delay and is appropriate and in proportion to the crime committed.
