Vietnam War: A. 1940s 1. Vietnam was colony of France (Euro white ppl ruling non-whites) - War breaks out- Leader of Vietnam : Ho Chi Minh 2. US/Truman Policy: - Supports France ; How? Truman sends mil aid BUT no US troops…. Why? Ho Chi Minh was communist (Truman supports non-communists) B. 1950s (changes) 1. France withdraws 4rm Vietnam forever; overall trend after ww2: end of colonies 2. Vietnam is split; 1. SV Govt .: formed by anti-communist 2. NV Govt .: formed by communists’ w/ Ho Chi Minh as leader 3. New War: - SV Gov Vs. NV + Viet Cong - Viet Cong: south Vietnamese, but support to communist polices, etc. 4. Pres. Eisenhower’s policy: - Huge aid to SV Gov - Send US advisors; Def: Mil officers, job was to train SV army, lead behind lines 5. Pres. Kennedy continues same policies C. Pres. Johnson (lbj), 1960s 1. Gulf of Tonkin incident - Johnson: said NV ships attacked AM ships. Why important? Congress passed resolution: Gulf of Tonkin Resolution; Gives Johnson the right/ authority to increase mil power 2.
