Asia & Us, 1937 to 1945 Era, 1937 through 1941 - Most of Asia is controlled by Europe, and European countries. - Economically poor, and weak - Exceptions : - Philippines – not European country; us colony - China - independent, but poor economy - Japan - not a colony, independent nation - Only Asian nation with economic success with factories. These factories produce military equipment; guns, jeeps. (military has power) they have the power to create an empire & expand it beyond their borders - 1937 leader of Japan: Emperor Hirohito Japan invades china, 1937- war breaks out & continues until 1940 - In war, japan becomes successful in conquering much of china - Japan will be brutal towards the Chinese US policy towards the war - Public opinion: American’s are sympathetic towards china - China seen as victim, helpless - US policy: Isolationists- this meant American’s were sympathetic towards china, but US did nothing to support china - US took no action - US traded with japan mostly & sold to them 1940- After 3 years of war things begin to change -
