Enji Paul Papazisi CEE 300/TAM 324 11/28/12 Assignment 29 Nearly all concrete degradation mechanisms are affected by the permeability and diffusivity of the cement paste matrix, which is essentially controlled by the capillary pore network within the material. But beyond this, specific modifications can be made to further improve the durability of concrete for a given case. Here, suggest one modification (either material change or structural design change or other change) that is not directly related to the permeability of the concrete pore network that will likely improve concrete durability for the following cases, and briefly justify your answer: a) concrete exposed to sewage, which has high sulfate concentrations SOLUTION Since the sewage has a high sulfate concentration, the concrete is prone to sulfate attack which can be greatly detrimental. Therefore, three options exist to counteract this: using low C 3 A cements (such as Type II of Type V), avoid sulfate exposure, or use low permeability concrete. Since the permeability cannot be altered and there is no way to avoid sulfate contact, the best option here is to use Type II or Type V cement, based on what is cheaper.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
