The sarcastic commentary of the Miss America pageant by John Oliver has proven that sarcasm is sometimes a very good if not an excellent way of critique. The segment watched is an effective piece of communication, where John oliver (the host) is critiquing not just the concept of the miss America beauty pageant, but also is criticizing their claim to be the world’s leading scholarship provider for women. John Oliver delivers his critique by showing clips, preforming then presenting his extensive research, and adding sarcasm to help enforce its meaning. Even though the subject was of great and utmost importance, the element of comedy has a heavy impact on the message delivered to the audience. The inclusion of the “butt glue” showed how superficial and idiotic that organization is. Furthermore, comedy turned the audience to a motivated audience. Unformatted text preview: done the role of a professional journalist. He has delivered information to his audience, like a journalist, and has done research to support his claims. This allows him to have authenticity and adds more value to his ethos. For a personal view, the quality of news that I normally come across deals with more important (to me) and recent news. The way that the news I watch is presented is in a very non-subjective (to an extent) manner. This piece of news has dealt with news that is not on the front headlines and has been presented in a very informal way. Not to indicate that the previous piece of news is better or worse, but it is un-doubtly unorthodox. How could it be improved? Better more controversial content, adding a bit more humor when it comes to facts to humiliation, ending wasn’t that funny, could have been ended better....
