Eric Reichgott ESHP 2040 Franchise Videos EP The videos that we watched in class last week were all from a CNBC special called “Behind the Counter: The Untold Story of Franchising” and it was hosted by Darren Rovell. There were actually five franchises that they looked into on the full video and they were Five Guys, Coldstone Creamery, Camp Bowwow, Tide Dry Cleaners and Dunkin’ Donuts. In the different videos, Darren speaks to different franchise owners about some of the “hidden” difficulties behind turning a profit in each of these companies and also if they are even set up to be successful. Of the three that we watched in class, there was one that really stood out

In this case, he spoke with 3 individuals who had experience running an ice cream business before taking the opportunity to become part of their franchise. It was amazing to hear about how they weren’t set up to turn a profit and also about how they were told a certain range of percentages for food costs at the beginning, that they just had no chance of matching. It was shocking to me that in today’s world, in business, margins and maximizing profits are everything, and to see a company set up someone who is carrying on their brand for failure right from the beginning just seems wrong in every way of thinking....
